Letter To My Future Host Family

Dear host family,

I am Nanase Kambayashi from Japan. I was born in Fukuoka and lived in Tokyo while I was attending University.
I have been in Canada (Vancouver) as a volunteer in childcare for one and half months when I was 18 years old and also lived in Lithuania for 1 year when I turned 20, thanks to a study abroad program.
I majored in Economics at the University in Tokyo. However, I have always been interested in learning new languages and cultures ever since I was young and love to take care of children as well. That is why I made the decision to go to
Canada and Lithuania and why I am applying for the au-pair position this time.
My current job at an apparel company called “UNIQLO” brought me around various cities in Japan such as Fukuoka (1 year), Hiroshima (1 year) and Osaka (since March of 2021).

The reason why I want to participate at this Au-Pair program and my dream after experiencing this program is to hone my skills in taking care of children and I hope to start my own company for babysitting in Japan. I already mentioned that I love learning in general, especially languages and cultures, to
improve the understanding between me and people from all over the world. That is why I would consider myself happy if I could teach children about the enjoyable things of life more like a sister than a teacher.

I have joined the volunteer program of childcare in Canada but I also worked at the nursery school as a part time job for 1 and half year while I was going to university. I have started to consider to turn making children’s and parents’ lives happier into my future job in Japan. I came to this conclusion after I realized that childcare services are not being used in Japan as much, especially in comparison to other countries, which leads to overwhelmed parents that have barely time for themselves or for their children. That’s one of the reasons why I am sure that it would be much better for families living here if they can make use of the childcare service that I want to build.

I would like to tell you the reason why I love children:
It’s the fact that they always remind me about how special and important it is to express kind words and behave caring towards others. Children are well-behaved most of the time
and genuinely apologize when they feel bad for others. They show their thankfulness with words and a big smile on their face. These might seem like normal things to adults, but I feel that these tend to be forgotten at the same time as we grow up. However, children always remind me of their importance.
That is to say, I respect children and I’m happy to spend time with them.

There are mainly 2 reasons why I chose the USA. for this program:
The first one is that I want to reach a higher fluency level in English, preferably that of a native speaker. I was in Lithuania for my study-abroad program, but the goal of that experience was not related to an improvement of my English skills. Which is why I chose a native-speaker country this time as I think that it’s necessary to improve my English skills to teach it later on or simply give explanations in English to children.
The second reason is that I want to learn about American parenting methods to implement them in the system which I want to establish in the future. So far, I have just recognized a few points of differences in parenting children between
Japan and USA. I am sure that I can learn more by living together with a local family and I hope I can bring some new perspectives to you as well.

Thank you so much for reading my long letter! To sum it up, I am a very open- minded person and love to learn new culture and spending time with new people! I love doing sports and going outside. I have played volleyball and I love to take walks, cook, sing, dance and craft (which I’m not good at but I love). I want to spend some meaningful time with your children.

I hope to see you all!
Best wishes.

Nanase Kambayashi
